What is Clomid?
Clomid (clomiphene citrate) is an antiestrogenic drug. It has a nonsteroidal structure that is close to chlorotririanisen. The action of clomiphene is due to the specific binding to the estrogen receptors of the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, which increases the secretion of the pituitary gonadotropic hormones. This, in turn, stimulates the maturation and endocrine activity of the follicle in the ovary, as well as the subsequent formation and stimulation of the function of the corpus luteum. High doses of clomiphene inhibit the secretion of gonadotropins.
The drug is indicated for use in the treatment of anovulatory infertility for the induction of ovulation. It is used in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome, Chiari-Frommel syndrome, dysfunctional metrorrhagia, galactorrhea, which occurred on the background of a tumor of the pituitary gland, a dysgonadotropic form of amenorrhea, secondary amenorrhea and post-contraceptive amenorrhea.
In addition, Clomid is used in the treatment of androgen deficiency, oligospermia and diagnosis of disorders of the gonadotropic function of the pituitary gland.
How to use Clomid?
Women take 50 mg of the drug per day orally, starting from the 5th and the 10th day of the menstrual cycle. In the absence of ovulation, the treatment is repeated in the next cycle with increasing dosage to 100 mg. If necessary, the third course of treatment is carried out in the saved maximum dosage. If you do not experience ovulation on taking the drug, it is not advisable to conduct more than three courses of therapy.
After taking these tablets, it is recommended to take progesterone-containing drugs to prevent luteal insufficiency.
Men take 50 mg of the drug 1 or 2 times a day for 6 weeks, under the constant control of the spermogram.
The drug is contraindicated in the presence of any of the following conditions:
- liver dysfunction;
- visual impairment (including history);
- ovarian cysts;
- primary hypofunction of the pituitary gland;
- bleeding of unknown origin;
- hypersensitivity to clomiphene.
- Central nervous system: increased irritability, fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, severe headache;
- Endocrine system: an increase in body weight, polyuria, pollakiuria, increased sweating, an increase in the size of the ovaries or ovarian cysts, pain in the area of the uterus, abundant menstruation;
- Digestive system: a feeling of heaviness in the epigastrium, flatulence, nausea, vomiting;
- Allergic reactions: urticaria, allergic dermatitis;
- Other: bouts of fever, heaviness in the chest, slight reversible alopecia, impaired visual acuity.
The drug is used only when the ovarian function is preserved.
When symptoms of ovarian hyperstimulation or other side effects appear during treatment, a dosing regimen should be adjusted.
The drug is not used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Clomiphene medication should not be used in patients who perform work associated with regular concentration and high speed of psychomotor reactions.
Clomid may interact with bexarotene (Targretin) and ospemifene (Osphena), so their joint use is not recommended.
